AiroTEC Participates in Regional Workshop to Strengthen Collaboration on Satellite-Based Air Pollution Monitoring

On 21–22 August 2025, the Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA) organized the international workshop “Strengthening Regional Collaboration on Satellite-Based Air Pollution Monitoring and Application” at the Maruay Garden Hotel, Bangkok, and Silpakorn University, Nakhon Pathom Campus.

The workshop gathered over 40 participants, including academics, government representatives, and institutions from several countries: the Republic of Korea, Lao People’s Democratic Republic, Socialist Republic of Vietnam, Republic of Indonesia, Republic of the Philippines, and Thailand.

The event focused on enhancing regional cooperation and knowledge exchange regarding the use of satellite data and ground-based monitoring networks to support sustainable air quality management. It also served as a platform for sharing case studies from different countries and discussing future research directions for collaborative development.

Representing Thailand, Dr. Ratchaphon Samphutthanont, Director of the Asian Air Quality Operations Center by Space Technology, Geo-informatics & Environmental Engineering (AiroTEC), Chiang Mai Rajabhat University, was invited to present on the topic “Thailand Case Studies: Roles of Collaboration Projects in Advancing Air Pollution Research and Applications.” He highlighted the role of the Pandora and GEMS networks in monitoring haze and PM2.5 pollution in Northern Thailand, particularly in Chiang Mai, where severe haze events during the dry season (March–April) cause serious public health impacts.

In addition, participants had the opportunity to visit the newly installed Pandora monitoring station at the Department of Physics, Faculty of Science, Silpakorn University, Nakhon Pathom, which has become another key site in Thailand’s air quality monitoring network. This station further strengthens the country’s data infrastructure and research collaborations with both domestic and international partners.

AiroTEC’s participation in this workshop reflects its significant role as an active contributor to air quality, driving regional and international collaboration toward sustainable solutions for haze and air pollution challenges.
